FIFA 19 vs PES 19

When the new season begin, most football fans would face a dilemma on which game to buy. It's the constant battle between Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) versus EA's FIFA series. For me, Sport Interactive's edition of Football Manager (FM) is also competing for that sum of money. I used to play FIFA in elementary and middle school, and played PES in high school. For a few years back, I've also been buying FM. But FM's game play do not suit me anymore. As a final year student with a packed schedule, I find it difficult to make up the time to play the game. I bought last year's version of FM but barely played it. Therefore, since the start of the season, I decided to stop buying the football-manager simulation game and leave the competition open only for PES and FIFA.

Game reviewers usually talks a lot about graphics, game play, licenses and stuff. True, it effects some segmentation of the market, which are professional gamer. But as a casual gamer like me, it might not have that big of an impact on my consideration. For me, the most important consideration in choosing which game to buy is which games do my friends mostly plays. I bet there are a huge market segmentation who thinks alike.

FIFA vs PES's competition is similar to those of social media. Their marketers always emphasizes their differences, but essentially they are alike. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter essentially serves the same purpose. You write a status/post/picture, your friend can comment and like/love it. They are the same. FIFA and PES's competition are alike. They are essentially a football-simulation game. Yes, the graphics may be different, FIFA's game play is a little bit slower, but they're essentially the same. Even they have the same single-player career mode game play. FIFA's "The Journey" only adds little to their differences.

In social media competition, researchers concluded that "Network Effect" comes into play. What is it?

A network effect (also called network externality or demand-side economies of scale) is the positive effect described in economics and business that an additional user of a good or service has on the value of that product to others. When a network effect is present, the value of a product or service increases according to the number of others using it.

The classic example is the telephone, where a greater number of users increases the value to each. A positive externality is created when a telephone is purchased without its owner intending to create value for other users, but does so regardless. Online social networks work similarly, with sites like Twitter and Facebook increasing in value to each member as more users join.
The network effect can create a bandwagon effect as the network becomes more valuable and more people join, resulting in a positive feedback loop. (Wikipedia)
Most of us would use a certain social media not because its features but because most of our friends are using that social media. It would be pointless to brag your newly bought expensive bags or your vacation when no one is present on that social media platform, right?

For a casual gamer like me, the same applies. I started to play football-simulation game during elementary school. I was living in Malaysia at that time. My friend invited me to play on his console. It was FIFA. So, the next year, when I started to get addicted playing football-simulation game, I bought FIFA as well. When I moved to Indonesia for high school, I was shocked that most of the people there are playing PES instead of FIFA. As I tried to fit in, I trained playing PES and the next year, I chose PES over FIFA. Just like social media, it is pointless to play FIFA when most of your friends are playing PES. You'll lose. As there are differences in the game play, being great at FIFA doesn't mean you'll boss a PES battle.

The Network Effect is present here. The more people plays FIFA/PES brings more value for FIFA/PES as they will invite more and more people to play FIFA/PES with them creating a positive feedback loop.
